His SR job was at the Freeman and RVI in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where he developed his endoscopy skills and uniquely had joint medical and surgical  gastroenterology rounds. Surgeons, gastroenterologists, dieticians and pathologists all came along to the joint rounds. He returned to his roots in the North West as Consultant Surgeon with an interest in gastroenterology 22 years ago.  In the summer of 2005 he resigned his NHS contract in order to expand his private practice at Stretton and to allow him greater flexibility with NHS contract work (which is predicted to be 20% of NHS work load).
